Is it safe to drive with this message on?
The car may not brake for you on its own. Leave more room.
If it's the only warning, we'd usually say you can drive on.
Brake or stability-control light on too? Have it checked before you drive far.
Cleaning didn't clear it? Send us the VIN.

What it means, and what sets it off
"Check Forward Safety system" means the car has found a fault in its automatic emergency braking. The manuals call it Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist.
It uses a windshield camera and, on many trims, a front radar. The line under the message names the cause:
- "Forward Safety system disabled. Radar blocked" or "...Camera obscured": snow, ice, mud or a sticker covers a sensor. Clean it and restart.
- "Check Forward Safety system" on its own: cleaning won't clear it.
These repairs can shift a sensor's aim:
- A new windshield, or tint over the camera.
- Bumper or grille repair, or a knock near the radar.
- A replaced camera or radar.
No recent glass, bumper or sensor work? Aim is less likely the cause. Start with a dealer inspection, under warranty if it's covered.
What to do when the message appears
- 1
Read the line under it
Take a photo of the whole message. Blocked or obscured means a covered sensor. A bare "Check Forward Safety system" means a fault.
- 2
Clean it and restart
Wipe the radar cover on the grille or bumper, and the glass by the mirror. Remove any plate frame or bumper guard.
- 3
Still on? Send the VIN and photo
Add any new glass, tint, bumper or grille work.
- 4
We find the sensor and re-aim it
Your quote names the likely sensor and its price before anything is scheduled. A scan at the job confirms it.
What re-aiming costs
New glass usually means camera calibration, $300. Bumper or grille work usually means radar calibration, $330.
Calibration, per system
Coding a replaced part to your vehicle
Diagnostic scan
- Same price on a mobile visit, except rows marked Shop bay only.
- Prices are before sales tax. Whether labor is taxed depends on your state; any tax that applies is itemized on your written quote.
- Dynamic calibration runs on the road, so it can be done as a mobile visit. Static calibration needs a level, lit, measured space, so whether your job can be done mobile depends on what your car's documented procedure calls for.
- Rows marked Shop bay only are done in a shop bay. The bay-and-road camera price applies when your car needs both calibrations.

Hyundai: Check Forward Safety system
Newer ones, like the 2025 Tucson, say "Check Driver Assistance system." Same price.
-
Kia: Check Forward Safety system
Newer ones, like the 2026 K4, say "Check Driver Assistance system". Same price.
-
Genesis calibration and prices
Newer ones, like the 2025 GV80, say "Check Driver Assistance system." Same price.
Know your Forward Safety message
Snow or dirt on a sensor clears with a wipe. A bare "Check Forward Safety system" is a fault, so send the VIN.
Hyundai, Kia and Genesis share one set of Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist messages. The fault message has three wordings:
- Oldest: "Check Forward Collision Avoidance Assist system", on Kias such as the 2019 Sorento
- Older: "Check Forward Safety system", on the 2022 Tucson, 2023 Sportage and 2023 GV80
- Newer: "Check Driver Assistance system.", on the 2024 Santa Fe and Kona, 2025 Tucson and 2026 K4
A covered sensor gets its own line. Newer models print the right-hand words:
| Older wording | Newer wording |
|---|---|
| Forward Safety system disabled. Radar blocked | Driver Assistance system limited. Radar blocked. |
| Forward Safety system disabled. Camera obscured | Driver Assistance system limited. Camera obscured. |

The camera sits inside the car, near the top of the windshield.
The 2022 Tucson's radar is "mounted behind the front grill." Kia manuals name a "front radar cover."
Some trims have no front radar. There, the camera is the only sensor involved. A scan confirms why.

The manuals name what can block or shift the sensors. Look for these first:
- tint, stickers or damaged glass in front of the camera
- a license plate frame, bumper guard or wrap near the radar
- a replaced or repainted bumper around the radar
- a trailer or hitch-mounted carrier
Two lines from the Tucson manuals:
- 2025: "Never install any accessories, stickers, or tint the front windshield."
- 2022: "Use only genuine HYUNDAI parts to repair the bumper where the radar is located."

Forward Safety works again once the snow, rain or dirt is gone. Some models also need a restart.
Restart while it's covered and it may stay off. The Telluride manual says it "maintains the last setting."
A bump can knock the radar out of line. The 2022 Tucson manual says no message may appear.

Two radars sit at the rear bumper corners. They print their own blocked messages:
- "Blind-Spot Safety system disabled. Radar blocked"
- "Rear Cross-Traffic Safety system disabled. Radar blocked"
Unhook any trailer or carrier and clean. Still on after rear bumper work? Blind spot calibration is $330.
"Smart Cruise Control disabled. Radar blocked" means the front radar. More on blind spot and cruise control messages.

Check Forward Safety system questions
If the message reads "Forward Safety system disabled. Radar blocked" or "Camera obscured", clean the sensor and restart. That usually clears it.
A bare "Check Forward Safety system" is a fault, and cleaning won't clear it. After new glass it's usually a camera calibration, $300.
After bumper or grille work it's usually the radar, $330. A scan confirms which. No recent work? Have the dealer inspect it first.
It depends which part needs re-aiming. Front camera calibration is $300 and front radar calibration is $330 at a service center.
Prices are per system, before sales tax where your state charges it on labor, and the full rate card is on the pricing page.
A replaced camera or radar also needs coding, $275. A diagnostic scan, when your job needs one, is priced and itemized separately.
Usually, yes. Older Kias such as the 2019 Sorento print the full system name. Newer models print "Check Driver Assistance system."
A scan confirms which sensor set it off. The prices are the same as for "Check Forward Safety system".
"Driver Assistance system limited. Radar blocked." means the radar is covered. Clear the cover and start the car again.
If the message returns after calibration, aim wasn't the whole problem. The sensors are aimed against the wheel alignment, so ask for a check.
Look for a plate frame, bumper guard or wrap near the radar, or tint near the camera.
A replaced or repainted bumper can upset the radar too. Ask your body shop for genuine parts there.
Calibration can't fix the wrong part, so the shop or dealer installs the right one first. Then we calibrate again, quoted before we start.
Check your policy. If it began after a windshield claim or collision repair, ask if the calibration can go on that claim.
Cleaning a blocked sensor costs nothing. If you do claim, send the adjuster our quote, which prices each sensor on its own line.
Message still there? Send the VIN and a photo
Add any glass, tint, bumper or grille work it's had. Your quote is confirmed in writing before anything is scheduled.
