Is it safe to drive with lane keep assist unavailable?
Usually, yes, if no other warning is on: only the nudge back into your lane is gone.
Wheel tugging toward a line? Switch lane keeping off. Brake or stability warning too? Have that checked first.

Why lane keep assist is not working or unavailable
Often it has only paused. Lane keeping waits when its windshield camera can't read the lines:
- Speed: below about 32 to 45 mph, depending on the car.
- Lines: faint, wet or snowy, or in a work zone.
- Glass by the camera: dirt, fog, ice, or a hot cabin.
- You: hands off the wheel, or signaling.
- A restart: some cars turn it off with the engine.
Still off on a clear road? Check these:
- Toyota "LTA Unavailable": a sensor "other than the front camera" has a fault. Turn lane keeping off, wait, then on.
- Another system's fault: a brake, stability control or steering sensor problem. A scan finds it.
- A camera out of line: after a new windshield, suspension work or an alignment, or it steers toward a line.
What to do, in order
- 1
Read the exact words
Photograph the message. Unavailable often means a pause, but some cars use it for another system's fault. Malfunction, service or check means a fault.
- 2
Clear the glass
Clean the windshield around the mirror, inside and out. Hot day? Cool the cabin first, then restart.
- 3
Drive on clear lines
Drive over 45 mph on clear lines with it on. Working again? Nothing to book, unless the windshield, suspension or alignment was just done.
- 4
Still off, or new glass? Get a quote
Suspension or alignment work counts too. Send the VIN with the message for your quote.
Lane keeping prices
When lane keeping needs a fix, it's front camera calibration. A new camera costs extra to set up. Get your quote.
Calibration, per system
Coding a replaced part to your vehicle
Diagnostic scan
- Same price on a mobile visit, except rows marked Shop bay only.
- Prices are before sales tax. Whether labor is taxed depends on your state; any tax that applies is itemized on your written quote.
- Dynamic calibration runs on the road, so it can be done as a mobile visit. Static calibration needs a level, lit, measured space, so whether your job can be done mobile depends on what your car's documented procedure calls for.
- Rows marked Shop bay only are done in a shop bay. The bay-and-road camera price applies when your car needs both calibrations.

Know your lane keeping
Pause or fault? The light, the words on the dash and your speed tell you.
Most lane keep assist symbols show a car between two lines. Its color says what it's doing:
- White or green: on. A 2023 RAV4 turns green when it's steering.
- Flashing as you drift: a warning to steer back.
- Flashing, "Unavailable Camera Temperature High": a hot camera on a 2023 Rogue. It waits for a cooler cabin.
- Amber or orange, staying on: a pause or a fault. Read the message beside it.
A 2019 CR-V's amber light that stays on means "Have your vehicle checked by a dealer."

Three lane features read the same windshield camera. Each works only inside a speed range.
- Lane departure warning warns you as you cross a line unsignaled.
- Lane keep assist adds a gentle steering nudge when you drift.
- Lane centering holds you mid-lane, mostly with adaptive cruise on.
| Car and feature | Works at |
|---|---|
| GM lane keep assist, 2021 job aid | 37 to 112 mph |
| 2019 Honda CR-V lane keeping | 45 to 90 mph, pauses at 40 mph or less |
| 2023 Toyota RAV4 departure alert | About 32 mph and up |
Below the range it waits. Nothing is wrong.

On a lane keep assist message, the last words tell you which. Toyota calls its lane feature LTA.
- Toyota "LTA Unavailable at Current Speed": too fast for it. Slow down.
- Toyota "LTA Unavailable": another sensor, "other than the front camera". Turn LTA off, wait, then on.
- Toyota "LTA Malfunction Visit Your Dealer": a fault. The lane departure alert stops with it.
- Hyundai "Check Lane Safety system": a fault, for a dealer check.
- Kia "Camera obscured": the manual says "it is not a malfunction". Clear the glass.
- Mercedes: "Currently Unavailable" is a pause. "Inoperative" is a fault if it stays.

Lane keeping leans on the brakes, stability control and steering sensors. A fault there switches it off.
- 2023 Toyota RAV4: steering help stops while traction or stability control is working or switched off.
- 2018 Honda Accord: its lane message can mean "a problem with a system related to the LKAS".
- 2023 Nissan Rogue: on AWD models, snow or off-road mode makes lane intervention "Currently Unavailable".
- Nissan "Not Available System malfunction": restart. If it stays, it needs a scan.
A diagnostic scan finds these.
Cruise control off too? Read adaptive cruise unavailable. A collision warning? Read forward collision warning light.

Pulling toward a line? Switch lane keeping off and book a check.
What knocks the camera's aim off:
- A new windshield. The 2023 RAV4 manual says the camera "must be recalibrated".
- A chip repaired in front of the camera.
- Suspension or ride height work. Volkswagen's 2019 driver assist guide lists rear wheel angle and ride height changes.
- A wheel alignment. It changes the line the car drives against the camera's aim. More on alignments.
If the car doesn't track straight, the camera can pass its check yet steer off. Align first.

Some lane messages come from the camera's mount or software. Re-aiming alone won't clear those.
- Jeep "Service Active Lane Management" (2024 to 2026 Grand Cherokee, Wagoneer): maybe the bracket clip or aftermarket glass.
- The Jeep fix: check the bracket and glass, then calibrate on a road drive.
- "Lane Assist Not Available" (some 2020 to 2021 Atlas Cross Sport, 2021 Atlas): needs a camera software update.
- A camera that won't calibrate on good glass may need replacing, setting up and calibrating.
Lane calibration ends with a road test on marked lanes.

Lane keep assist questions
Often not. If it comes back after you clean the glass, restart and drive on clear lines, it had only paused.
New windshield? The 2023 RAV4 manual says its camera "must be recalibrated" after one.
Suspension or alignment work can need it too, and so can a pull toward a line. Send the VIN and we'll check your car.
That calibration is $300 at a service center.
Re-aiming the windshield camera is $300 at a service center. A replaced camera adds $275 to set it up. Compare every system's price.
No recent work, and it says malfunction? A scan reads the fault first, for $115 at a service center.
A diagnostic scan, when your job needs one, is priced and itemized separately.
On many cars it's built to. The 2019 Honda CR-V switches lane keeping off every time the engine stops.
Many cars also pause it at low speed, with the wipers running continuously or with your hands off the wheel.
Turning off on clear roads at highway speed, or with a warning? Then it needs a scan or a calibration.
First check it's switched on in the settings. A repair can leave it off.
Stays off? Then re-aiming can't reach the cause. It can be another system's fault, the camera mount, the glass or the alignment.
The shop or dealer fixes that, then the camera is calibrated again. We price the second calibration before it starts.
Check your policy. If lane keeping quit after new glass or a body repair, raise the calibration while that claim is open.
Our written quote prices each system separately, so you can send it to your insurer.
