Is it safe to drive before the calibration?
You steer and brake as normal. A misaligned sensor may react late, never, or to nothing, without warning.
Until the calibration, drive as if these are off:
- adaptive cruise control
- collision warning or automatic braking
- lane keeping
- blind spot warning
Send the VIN for your quote, which lists each sensor to calibrate.

What causes it: a repair that moves a sensor
Most cars with driver assistance watch the road through a windshield camera. Many add radar, which measures distance with radio waves.
After an accident, the repair often removes parts your sensors sit behind. Put back crooked, a sensor aims at the wrong patch of road.
Calibration fixes that. It points each camera or radar back at the right stretch of road.
Cosmetic work alone often needs no calibration. Look for these on your repair order, since they most often mean a calibration:
- Bumper cover, grille or emblem: a new one in front of the radar, which on many makes means re-aiming it.
- Bumper off for access: to reach the radiator or a headlight.
- Radar bracket: bent or replaced, even with the radar untouched.
- Frame or structural repair: rail, radiator support or reinforcement work, even if no sensor came off.
- Windshield: new glass carries the camera.
- Airbag that went off: can mean camera and front radar calibration.
- Rear corners: work over the radars that light your side mirror warning.
- Suspension: on a Nissan, even the wheel alignment after the repair.
What to ask the body shop
Ask for three papers before you take the car back. A clear dash doesn't settle it.
- Scan before the repair: a computer readout of faults the crash stored.
- Scan after the repair: the same readout, run again.
- Calibration report: one per sensor the repair touched, or the automaker's line saying it needs none.
All three, with a clean second scan? You have what the automakers ask for.
Missing one? Ask the shop to check the repair steps, or ask us.

Calibration prices after a collision repair
Front hits usually move the front radar, rear corner hits the blind spot radars.
Calibration, per system
Coding a replaced part to your vehicle
Diagnostic scan
- Same price on a mobile visit, except rows marked Shop bay only.
- Prices are before sales tax. Whether labor is taxed depends on your state; any tax that applies is itemized on your written quote.
- Dynamic calibration runs on the road, so it can be done as a mobile visit. Static calibration needs a level, lit, measured space, so whether your job can be done mobile depends on what your car's documented procedure calls for.
- Rows marked Shop bay only are done in a shop bay. The bay-and-road camera price applies when your car needs both calibrations.

Know your collision repair
Your repair order lists the parts that came off. Check them against the sensors below.
Many panels a crash damages first hide a sensor or sit in its view.
| Area | What sits there |
|---|---|
| Front | The radar, behind the grille emblem or low in the bumper. |
| Glass | The forward camera, on the windshield behind the mirror. |
| Sides | Surround view cameras (the 360° parking view), in the side mirrors. |
| Rear | Blind spot radars, parking sensors in the bumper face, a backup camera in the tailgate or trunk lid. |
A few models, from their owner's manuals:
- 2023 Honda CR-V: front radar behind the emblem.
- 2018 Honda Accord: front radar in the lower grille.
- 2025 Hyundai Tucson: blind spot radars in the rear bumper, at both corners.
- 2022 Ram 2500 or 3500: blind spot radars inside the taillights.
New glass is a camera job. See calibration after windshield replacement.

Ford's and GM's collision statements call for a scan before and after the repair. Each scan reads the car's stored trouble codes (DTCs).
In their words:
- Ford, May 2026: "Certain ADAS sensors may not immediately trigger a DTC if misaligned."
- GM, March 2026: the car "must be retested (Post Scan) after all repairs are complete".
So a quiet dashboard proves little. Ask for both scan reports and check them against the parts list.
On a Honda, structural repair or a deployed airbag means aiming the camera and radar. Neither has to have come off.

A bumper with radar behind it can't be patched like other panels. Thick paint and filler change what the radar sees through.
A mil is a thousandth of an inch. The limits by make:
| Make | Paint and repair limit |
|---|---|
| GM | Paint only, 13 mils in total at most. Plastic that needs repair means a new bumper. |
| Ford | Topcoat only, "≤12 mils (300 microns) total thickness." No filler or plastic welding. |
Does a respray within these limits need a calibration? By make:
- GM and Ford: their bumper statements set paint limits but name no calibration for a respray alone.
- Honda: any front bumper repair within 300 mm, about 12 inches, of the radar means re-aiming it.
- Honda, radar cover and grille: no paint and no wraps.
Filler or a plastic weld on that bumper can weaken the signal. No calibration makes up for it; the fix is a new bumper.

On many makes, a new radar or camera is two jobs. First it's coded, then it's calibrated.
- Coding, or programming, loads the software and settings made for your exact car into the new part.
- Calibration lines it up with the direction the car actually drives.
Where the procedure skips coding, calibration is the whole job. Some procedures also need the wheel alignment in spec first.
Who calibrates, and how
The body shop can calibrate, or send the car to a provider like us. Either way, ask for the report.
Some cars calibrate in a bay, facing target boards or radar reflectors. Others need a road drive, or both.

Ford, GM and Nissan rule on used sensors in writing:
- Ford, May 2026: "Recycled, salvaged, aftermarket, or reconditioned ADAS sensors are not approved for use."
- GM, September 2026: "only new GM Genuine ADAS components" are approved for collision repairs.
- Nissan, January 2026: salvaged or secondary-market sensors are "strictly prohibited."
A salvage title usually means a total loss. A rebuilt title means it was repaired and retitled under state rules.
Neither title records the sensors. Ask the seller for the rebuild's scan and calibration reports. With none, start with a scan.

Questions after a collision repair
The ones for the sensors the repair touched. Automakers' repair steps usually call for those, so they aren't an extra. Most often:
- front radar after bumper or grille work, even a new bumper cover on many makes
- the camera after new glass
- blind spot radar after rear corner work
- the camera and front radar after frame repair or a deployed airbag
Touched means the sensor, or a part it sits on or looks through, came off, was repaired or replaced.
Your make's procedure has the last word. On a Ford, a new bumper cover needs no radar calibration if the radar stays undisturbed.
Possibly. A slightly misaimed radar still works, so the car may store no fault and light nothing.
The repair order's parts, checked against your make's repair steps, decide it. Send us a photo of the repair order for a quote.
After a front hit it's usually the front radar, $330 at a service center.
The camera, after new glass or a deployed airbag, is $300. Prices are per system, before sales tax where your state charges it on labor.
A replaced front radar adds a coding charge, $275, where the make's procedure codes it. The part isn't included.
A diagnostic scan, when your job needs one, is priced and itemized separately. Every rate is on the pricing page.
Often something physical is wrong that calibration can't fix:
- a bent radar bracket
- a bumper cover that isn't genuine
- damaged wiring
- a wheel alignment out of spec
Those go back to the body shop, then calibration runs again.
Check your policy first. On a claim, calibration belongs on the estimate as its own line.
If it turns up mid-repair, it goes on a supplement, an add-on the insurer has to approve.
A rebuilt title records no sensor work, so the check is a scan plus calibration of any replaced sensor.
