Can I keep driving with the message on?
Usually, yes. But don't count on a collision warning or automatic braking while it's on.
- Unavailable: it should clear once the camera and radar can see.
- Malfunction, or a message that won't clear: book a check right away.
- A red brake warning light too: stop somewhere safe and call a dealer.
- A steering warning light too: get the car seen right away.

What triggers a Toyota pre-collision (PCS) message
"Pre-Collision System Malfunction" on a Toyota means its front camera and radar system found a fault. "Unavailable" means they can't see for now.
Radar measures distance by radio. Anything that blinds them or knocks their aim triggers a message:
- Dirt, snow or ice on your windshield or grille.
- Heat, cold, fog, dark or glare. It clears when conditions do.
- A sticker near the camera, or an open hood.
- Stability control off (a skidding-car light with OFF), which also stops automatic braking.
- New glass, grille, bumper or alignment. That needs a calibration: re-aiming your camera or radar to look straight ahead. We do that nationwide.
- A hard knock up front. It needs a look.
What to do before you book
Work down this list. Had recent glass or body work? Skip to the prices below.
- Clean the windshield in front of the camera, and the grille.
- Car sat in the sun? Run the air conditioning. Freezing? Run the heater.
- Check stability control is on. A skidding-car light with OFF? Press its button again.
- Drive a while in normal traffic. "Unavailable" should clear by itself.
- Still on, or it says "Malfunction"? Then the camera or radar needs a check.

What a Toyota pre-collision fix costs
New glass, grille, bumper or alignment work? That needs a calibration, even if the message cleared: camera after glass, radar after the rest.
Calibration, per system
Coding a replaced part to your vehicle
Diagnostic scan
- Same price on a mobile visit, except rows marked Shop bay only.
- Prices are before sales tax. Whether labor is taxed depends on your state; any tax that applies is itemized on your written quote.
- Dynamic calibration runs on the road, so it can be done as a mobile visit. Static calibration needs a level, lit, measured space, so whether your job can be done mobile depends on what your car's documented procedure calls for.
- Rows marked Shop bay only are done in a shop bay. The bay-and-road camera price applies when your car needs both calibrations.

- With a buzzer: a fault, needs a check right away. No buzzer: off for now. Follow the instructions on the display.
2020 Tundra and Sequoia
- What the dash shows:
- "Pre-Collision System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer", "Pre-Collision System Unavailable Clean Sensor" or "Pre-Collision System Unavailable"
- What it means:
- Malfunction: a fault. Clean Sensor: remove the dirt or ice. Unavailable alone: off for now. If it doesn't clear, get it seen right away.
2023 RAV4; 2024 RAV4 Hybrid, Camry, Tundra
- What the dash shows:
- "Pre-Collision System Unavailable See Owner's Manual" or "Pre-Collision System Radar In Self Calibration Unavailable See Owner's Manual"
- What it means:
- See Owner's Manual: clears once the radar can read its surroundings. Self Calibration: clear anything off the radar cover. Still on after a drive? Book a check.

Know your Toyota's pre-collision system
Most pre-collision (PCS) messages mean a dirty sensor, a hot or cold camera, or a sensor off its aim. Find yours below.
Each message names what the system needs. The words after the system's name tell you which:
- Unavailable: off for now, because the camera or radar can't see.
- Unavailable See Owner's Manual: the radar can't make sense of its surroundings yet. It shows until it can.
- Clean Sensor: dirt or ice covers a sensor. Remove it.
- Radar In Self Calibration: remove anything stuck on the radar or its cover, then drive a while.
- Malfunction: the car found a fault. Book a check.
- PCS light flashing (2018 Camry) or with a buzzer (2019 to 2021 RAV4): a fault.
- PCS light steady and silent: off for now.
The table above shows each model.
Off for now? Clean the glass and grille, wait out heat or cold, check stability control.
Other makes word this warning their own way. See forward collision warning light.

The camera sits high on the windshield. Keep the glass in front of it clean, with no stickers.
The radar sits behind the grille. Where exactly depends on the model:
- 2018 Camry and 2016 to 2018 RAV4: behind the emblem
- 2019 and later RAV4: behind a radar cover in the grille
Dirt, snow or ice on the grille can block it. Don't paint it or stick anything on it.

Some jobs always need the sensors recalibrated. Each can change what a sensor sees:
- a new windshield, for the camera
- the radar or grille taken off and put back, or replaced
- a new front bumper
- a wheel alignment, for the radar
Had a hard hit to the front? Get the car looked at, even with no message.
Older cars count too. The 2016 and 2017 RAV4 and Prius need camera aiming after new glass.
We follow Toyota's documented procedure. Your model: Toyota calibration by model.

A Lexus has the same windshield camera and grille radar. More on Lexus calibration.
Much the same things stop it working:
- dirt, ice or a sticker on the glass in front of the camera
- bugs, dirt or ice on a sensor
- a camera or radar knocked out of line
- a ride height changed by suspension or tire work

Toyota warns "just one degree of misalignment can affect system performance." Steps depend on what was repaired.
Changing ride height or tilt can stop the sensors working. Replaced sensors should be genuine Toyota or Lexus.
A replaced radar can need coding too. Where Toyota's procedure has that step, your quote shows two lines:
- coding, which sets the new radar up for your car, $275
- the radar calibration, $330
The radar comes from your dealer or shop.

Pre-Collision System Malfunction: your questions
No, the dealer is one option. When the camera or radar is off its aim, the fix is a calibration to Toyota's documented procedure.
We do that nationwide. Front camera calibration is $300 and front radar calibration is $330 at a service center.
Prices are per system, before sales tax where your state charges it on labor, and the full rate card is on the pricing page.
Under Toyota's warranty? Ask the dealer first whether the fault is covered.
There's no reset button. An "Unavailable" message clears itself once the camera and radar can see, so clean the glass and grille and drive.
Switching the system off in the settings doesn't clear it. The PCS warning light stays on while it's off.
A "Malfunction", or a message that keeps coming back, has a cause to find. Get a quote with the message it shows.
Your Toyota's front camera looks through the windshield, so new glass means re-aiming it.
That's windshield camera calibration, $300 at a service center. Ask the glass shop first whether it already did it.
If cleaning clears the message, it costs nothing. Front camera calibration is $300 and front radar calibration is $330 at a service center.
Prices are per system, before sales tax where your state charges it on labor, and the full rate card is on the pricing page.
Your quote names which of the two your car needs. A diagnostic scan, when your job needs one, is priced and itemized separately.
Then something physical is usually wrong, and calibration can't cure that. The usual suspects:
- a bent radar mount, or the metal behind it pushed in
- a failed camera or radar
Any extra work is quoted in writing before it's done.
Check your policy. If a windshield or collision claim led to the message, ask whether the calibration is part of it.
Your quote lists every system with its own price. It's ready to forward to the adjuster.
