Is it safe to drive with the radar blocked?
Usually, yes. The features that read the radar switch off, like distance-keeping cruise and automatic braking.
So leave more room, and clear snow off the front. Still on once it's clean? Get a quote.

What the message means and what causes it
The front radar looks out through a cover in the grille, emblem or bumper. Cover it, and the radar can't see ahead.
So the car turns off what needs it, like distance-keeping cruise. Most causes clear with a wipe or on their own:
- Snow or ice over the grille.
- Mud, salt or bugs on the emblem or cover.
- Rarely, an empty road: with nothing to track, the message can show until traffic returns.
Two causes need you to act:
- Something mounted in front: a plate frame, sticker, wrap, grille guard or plow. Take it off.
- A radar that moved: front-end work or a knock can leave it aimed off.
Parking and cross-traffic "sensor blocked" messages come from other sensors. For a crash-ahead warning light, see forward collision warning light.
Clear it, then test it
- 1
Read the whole message
Photograph it, second line included. Blocked, obstructed or dirty mean cleaning. Not aligned, malfunction or service mean a fault, so get it checked.
- 2
Clean the radar's cover
Engine off. Wipe the emblem, cover or grille with a soft cloth and water. Clear ice and snow first. Don't pry anything off.
- 3
Take off what's in front
Anything bolted or stuck near the radar can block it, like a plate frame or bumper guard. Remove it, then try again.
- 4
Restart and drive
Drive a while with traffic ahead. Still there when clean, or after bumper work? Note the message and recent front-end work for your quote.
What re-aiming the radar costs
Re-aiming a moved radar is $330. A replaced radar adds $275 to set it up. Get your total, or see every rate.
Calibration, per system
Coding a replaced part to your vehicle
Diagnostic scan
- Same price on a mobile visit, except rows marked Shop bay only.
- Prices are before sales tax. Whether labor is taxed depends on your state; any tax that applies is itemized on your written quote.
- Dynamic calibration runs on the road, so it can be done as a mobile visit. Static calibration needs a level, lit, measured space, so whether your job can be done mobile depends on what your car's documented procedure calls for.
- Rows marked Shop bay only are done in a shop bay. The bay-and-road camera price applies when your car needs both calibrations.

Know your front radar
Most blocked radar messages come from dirt on the cover. The tabs below show how to tell dirt from a radar that moved.
Your manual shows where the radar looks out. That's where to clean, and where repairs can knock it.
| Make | Where the radar sits |
|---|---|
| Honda | Behind the emblem (2023 CR-V); front lower grille (2018 Accord) |
| Acura | Behind the emblem (2021 RDX) |
| Mazda | Behind the front emblem (2023 CX-5) |
| Hyundai | Behind the front grille (2022 Tucson) |
| Ford | Behind the cover in the center of the lower grille (2019 F-150) |
| Nissan | The sensor area of the front bumper (2023 Rogue) |
The 2024 Chevrolet Equinox and 2025 Trax carry no front radar. They show camera messages.

The manuals list the same causes. Most are weather or dirt on the cover:
- snow, ice and slush
- mud, road salt and bugs
- stickers or film, even clear ones
Others are bolted on, and the manuals warn against them near the radar:
- a license plate frame, bumper guard or bumper wrap
- a grille guard, snowplow or aftermarket grille

Park with the engine off. Clean the spot the manual names with a soft cloth and water.
Skip solvents and polish. The 2018 Accord manual says: "Never use chemical solvents or polishing powder."
Don't pry off the emblem. The Rogue manual says: "Do not alter, remove, or paint the front bumper."
Then drive. The F-150 manual says the car may need "several minutes" to see the radar is clear.

A front camera blocked message points to the camera behind the windshield. Each make words it differently:
- Ford: "Front Camera Low Visibility Clean Screen"
- Nissan: "Not Available Front Camera Obstructed"
- Hyundai and Kia: "Camera obscured"
Clean the glass and clear fog or ice. Still on after new glass? See calibration after windshield replacement.

Stays on a clean car, or returns in dry weather? Then something changed up front.
- A front hit or repair can shift the radar. The Mazda manual says it "may have moved".
- A new grille or bumper: on a 2023 RAV4, the manual says the radar then "must be recalibrated."
- A wrong or repainted emblem can block the radar. Use the genuine part made for it.
- A warning on every trip, with no weather to blame: Ram's manual calls for a realignment.
- No warning: Ford's position statement says a misaligned sensor "may not immediately trigger a DTC" (a fault code).
The right part goes on first. Then we re-aim the radar for $330, confirmed in your quote.

Radar blocked: your questions
A blocked message means the front radar can't see through its cover. Usually that's snow, mud or bugs, and cleaning fixes it.
Calibrate if it stays on a clean car, or returns after bumper work. Re-aiming the front radar costs $330 at a service center.
Re-aiming a moved radar costs $330 at a service center. A new radar is set up to the car first, adding $275.
A bent bracket goes to the body shop before we start. A diagnostic scan, when your job needs one, is priced and itemized separately.
Often, yes. A new grille, emblem or bumper sits in the radar's view, and installing it can shift the aim.
A clear dash isn't proof. A radar that moved doesn't always set a warning.
Ask whether the radar was calibrated. If not, we re-aim it for $330 at a service center.
Our guide to calibration after collision repair lists what to ask the body shop.
Then look past the aim. Check the emblem, grille and bumper cover in front of the radar, and have the fault codes read.
A wrong or repainted part can block a radar that passed. Once the right part is on, calibrating again is $330, quoted first.
Check your policy. If the message started after a collision repair, ask the insurer whether the calibration belongs on that claim.
Cleaning off snow or mud costs nothing. If you claim, the quote names the radar and its price for the adjuster.
