Is it safe to drive with blind spot unavailable?
You can drive it, but the mirror lights won't warn you. Look over your shoulder before changing lanes.
On some cars, like a 2023 Nissan Rogue, the backing-out alert stops too. Look both ways.

Unavailable, blocked or malfunction: what the warning means
Unavailable means the system switched itself off, so the mirror lights won't warn you. Something blocks the radars, or the car found a fault.
Two radars sit at the rear corners. These clear once you deal with them:
- Dirt or weather: snow, ice or mud over the rear corners.
- A trailer or bike rack: some cars switch it off while one is on.
- An empty road: with little to bounce off, the radar can report itself blocked.
These need a check:
- A fault word: fault, malfunction or check in the message.
- Rear repairs: bumper or taillight work can move a radar or put it back wrong. Calibration re-aims it.
What to do now
- Read the last words. Blocked, wipe or obstruction usually means something covers the radar.
- Wash the rear corners. Clear snow and ice, then switch the car off and on.
- Towing or carrying bikes? Take it off, then restart.
- Fault word, no rear work? Start with a diagnostic scan, which reads the fault the car stored.
- After rear bumper work? Ask about blind spot radar calibration, even with the light off.

What it costs
Calibration puts a moved radar back on target. A replaced radar needs setting up to the car, $275, then the calibration. Get your total.
Calibration, per system
Coding a replaced part to your vehicle
Diagnostic scan
- Same price on a mobile visit, except rows marked Shop bay only.
- Prices are before sales tax. Whether labor is taxed depends on your state; any tax that applies is itemized on your written quote.
- Dynamic calibration runs on the road, so it can be done as a mobile visit. Static calibration needs a level, lit, measured space, so whether your job can be done mobile depends on what your car's documented procedure calls for.
- Rows marked Shop bay only are done in a shop bay. The bay-and-road camera price applies when your car needs both calibrations.
Find your make's blind spot message
Blocked usually means clean it. A fault word means send the VIN.

Know your blind spot warning
The last words of the message say if something blocks the radar or something is wrong. Clean first, and get a fault word checked.
Most blind spot messages end in a word that names the problem. Read it before you book anything.
| The message says | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Blocked, wipe, obstruction | Something covers the radar |
| Deactivated, trailer attached | The car switched it off |
| Fault, malfunction, check | The car found a fault |
| Not available, on its own | Either one |
The 2023 Rogue manual says to stop and restart. If "Not Available System Malfunction" returns, have it checked.
On a 2024 Telluride, clean the corner and restart. The system then works again.

Not every message means damage. The radar needs a clear view out and things to bounce off.
- A trailer: a 2019 F-150 towing without trailer coverage set up switches blind spot off and says so.
- A trailer or carrier: a 2024 Telluride or 2025 Tucson shows the blocked message.
- A bike rack: the 2023 CX-5 manual says to turn the system off while one is on.
- Empty country: desert or a road by a big drop on a Ram, open terrain on a Tucson.
- Long stretches: snow-covered roads, or long summer drives on hills that heat the radar, on a CX-5.
- A weak battery: the CX-5 lists low voltage too.
The 2022 Ram 2500 manual calls the empty-road case normal. The system recovers once the condition clears.

A rear repair can leave the warning on. Or it leaves the radar off aim, with no warning.
The 2025 Tucson manual warns it "may not work properly if the bumper has been replaced". Watch for:
- the radar knocked off aim, or its bracket bent
- a radar put back on the wrong side
- a sticker or label on the bumper near the radar
- extra paint or filler over the radar's spot
- a connector left unplugged behind the trim
Some cars notice. A CX-5 shows its blind spot off light if a rear radar moves far.

A blind spot radar job starts with the stored faults. Then each radar gets your car's procedure.
- Scan: read the stored faults and which side they point to.
- Mount check: each radar seated, on its own side and facing out.
- Aim: targets set up behind the car, or a drive that lets the radar adjust itself.
- Road test: in traffic, to see the mirror lights react.
After rear repairs, a 2024 Accord Hybrid warns over a shorter zone. It widens as the system adapts.
A bent bracket is body shop work, done before any aiming.

Blind spot monitor unavailable: your questions
Often, yes, if something was blocking it. Clean the rear corners, unhitch any trailer, then turn the car off and back on.
Message back on a clean car? Then a reset won't hold. A diagnostic scan reads the stored fault for $115.
A fault, malfunction or check word means the car found a problem, not dirt. Restart once on a clean car to be sure.
Still there? A diagnostic scan reads the stored fault and which side it points to, for $115.
Had rear body work? The radar may be off aim, and blind spot radar calibration is $330.
Dirt, if the message says blocked or obstruction and clears after a wash. Then there's nothing to book.
You need a check if it stays after rear body repair. A scan and a mount check find the cause first.
If it's off aim, re-aiming it is $330. Some cars, GM among them, adjust themselves on a drive instead.
Not necessarily. A radar can sit off aim without lighting a warning.
Some cars also warn over a smaller zone after a rear repair. They widen it after driving in traffic.
Ask the shop if the blind spot radars came off and if anyone checked them. If not, send us the VIN.
For the full list of questions, read calibration after collision repair.
It depends on the cause. Blind spot radar calibration is $330 per system, before sales tax.
A replaced radar adds its coding, $275, before the calibration.
A diagnostic scan, when your job needs one, is priced and itemized separately. It's $115, and every rate is on the pricing page.
Check your policy first. If your insurer paid for the rear repair, ask if it will add the calibration to that claim.
Send the adjuster your quote. It names the sensor and the price.
