What blind spot radar calibration does
Your blind spot radars are the two sensors at the rear corners that light the warning in your side mirrors.
Rear bumper, quarter panel or taillight work can knock them off aim. Calibration checks their aim and re-aims them where needed.
Your car sets the method: targets behind it, a road drive or a reset. Shops call the drive dynamic calibration and the targets static.
Send your VIN and we'll tell you which one your car takes. The price is the same either way.
Which one sounds like your car?
-
The body shop worked on a rear corner
Bumper cover off, quarter panel repaired, or a truck's taillight out. If the radar came off or its mount moved, most makes need re-aiming.
-
A blind spot radar was replaced
A new radar is often set up for your car, then calibrated. Setup is $275, plus calibration where your car's maker sets one.
-
The warning came on with no repair
Clean the rear corners first; mud, snow and stickers block the radar. Still on? See what the warning means.
Blind spot radar calibration prices
Re-aiming the blind spot radars is one price, whatever method your car needs. A new radar can add a setup charge.
Prices are before sales tax. Whether labor is taxed depends on your state; any tax that applies is itemized on your written quote.
What happens after you send the form
- 1
Send your VIN and what was repaired
The VIN shows which blind spot system your car has. Add the repair order, or a photo of it, if you have one.
- 2
Get your written quote
Whoever covers your ZIP code, a service center or mobile technician, prices the job. It's scheduled only once you say yes.
- 3
The radar's mount is checked
A radar loose on its tabs or a bent bracket can stop the calibration. That's body shop work.
- 4
Calibrated the way your car needs
Targets behind the car, a road drive or a reset, whichever your car calls for. If it can't be finished, you hear why.
What to have ready
- Your VIN, plus the make and model year.
- The rear work: bumper cover, quarter panel, taillight or tow hitch.
- A new radar? Whether it's new or used, and who installed it.
- The warning: the exact words on the dash, or which mirror light.
- Body shop paperwork: the repair order or scan report, as photos.
Don't clear codes or loosen anything first. Send what you have and we'll work out the rest.
Know your blind spot radar
Blind spot radars sit at the rear corners. You may also see this job called blind spot sensor or blind spot monitor calibration.
Most cars have two blind spot radars, one at each rear corner.
| Make | Where the radars sit |
|---|---|
| Honda | Rear body panel, left and right, behind the bumper |
| Toyota, Lexus | Inner side of the rear bumper |
| Nissan, Mazda | Inside or near the rear bumper |
| Hyundai, Kia | Rear corners, at the bumper |
| Ford | Behind the bumper covers, or in the taillights |
| GM: Chevrolet, GMC | Hidden in the rear corners |
| Ram 2500 and 3500, 2022 | Inside the taillights |
| Jeep Grand Cherokee, 2022 | Inside the rear bumper |
The mirror light is only the warning lamp. The exact radar spot varies by model.

Blind spot radars lose their aim when unbolted, or when what holds them bends. These jobs do it:
- Rear bumper work: the cover off or replaced, on cars where the radar comes off with it.
- Body repair: a quarter panel or rear body panel fixed or replaced.
- Taillight work: on trucks with the radars inside the taillights.
- A new radar: or the old one taken off and put back.
Honda's job aid lists "After replacing or repairing the body panel(s) where the ... radar unit is mounted."
Dirt and snow don't move a radar. They block its view, and cleaning fixes that.
Other rear sensors are separate jobs: parking sensor and backup camera calibration. Collision repair calibration covers the rest.

The blind spot radar looks out through the bumper cover. So the cover's plastic and paint matter too.
Honda's September 2024 statement, for some models with blind spot radar:
- A crack, dent or gouge in the radar's zone "cannot be repaired and will require bumper cover replacement."
- Paint scratches there mean refinishing the whole zone.
- When the cover is replaced, "new Honda Genuine bumper covers must be used."
A sticker inside a new cover can stop a calibration. So can thick paint over the radar.
The method comes from your car's maker. Your VIN tells us which one applies.
| Make | What calibration means |
|---|---|
| Honda, most models | A laser check against targets set behind the car |
| Honda 2022 Civic | A reset, then it relearns as you drive |
| Hyundai, Kia | Usually a check of the mounting angle, then a road drive |
| Nissan, some newer models | A road drive |
| Toyota, Lexus | Re-aiming against a reflector set near the car |
| Ford | A road-drive routine |
| GM, per its 2021 job aid | No calibration: the radars learn as you drive |
GM's job aid says to "simply drive the vehicle to begin the learn."
If a Honda's laser misses its target, the mount is checked for damage. That's body repair.

On some makes, a new blind spot radar takes two steps. It's set up, then calibrated.
- Toyota, some models: data written to the new radar, then the aim set.
- Ford: a replaced corner radar gets the alignment routine.
- GM: programming only, then it learns as you drive.
Setup is $275 where needed. Calibration is a separate line where the maker sets one.
Blind spot radar replacement covers the setup step.

With no repair, a blind spot warning usually means a blocked radar. Mud, snow and stickers do it.
Clean the rear corners and drive. The 2022 Ram 2500/3500 manual adds: turn the ignition off, then on.
Bike racks and hitch carriers can block or confuse the radars too. Ram's and Hyundai's manuals say so.
Still on? A diagnostic scan comes first.
A dead radar or a loose plug shows the same light.

Blind spot radar calibration questions
$330 per system at a service center, whatever method your car needs. If a radar was replaced, setting it up adds $275.
A diagnostic scan, when your job needs one, is priced and itemized separately. Prices are before sales tax, and body repairs are extra.
Every rate is on the pricing page.
It depends on the make. GM's blind spot radars learn as you drive, with no calibration.
After rear repairs, a GM gets scans before and after, and a mount check. Your quote prices only that work.
On most other makes, an unbolted radar, or a repaired panel it's bolted to, means re-aiming. A quiet dash doesn't prove it's on aim.
Yes, it drives normally. But the warning may come late or not at all, so check over your shoulder.
After a rear repair, some cars work with limited function until they relearn. Book the calibration soon after the body work.
It depends on the procedure. Dynamic calibration runs on the road, so it can be done as a mobile visit.
Static calibration needs a level, lit, measured space, so whether your job can be done mobile depends on what your car's documented procedure calls for.
Calibration on a mobile visit is $330, the same as at a service center. Your quote says which kind your car gets.
Check your policy. When the calibration follows a covered collision repair, ask the adjuster to add it to that claim.
Send them your written quote. It names the system and the price.
Tell us the date and the exact message. The technician checks what changed.
A bent bracket, a loose radar or a sticker inside the cover is body shop work.
A radar that doesn't respond may need replacing. A diagnostic scan shows which.
Rear bumper repaired or a radar replaced?
Send the VIN and say which corner was worked on. Your quote is confirmed in writing before anything is scheduled.
