Can I drive with adaptive cruise unavailable?
Usually, yes. Set your own speed and keep your own distance until it's back.
- Regular cruise often still works meanwhile.
- Collision warning (FCW) named in the message too? Then that's off as well. Leave extra room.

Why adaptive cruise switches off
Adaptive cruise (ACC on many dashes) uses a front radar, a windshield camera, or both. If they can't see ahead, it switches off.
Most causes pass or wipe off:
- Snow, ice, mud or bugs on the grille, bumper or windshield.
- Heavy rain, fog or low sun in the sensor's view.
- A very hot cabin, where cruise reads the windshield camera.
- Traction control switched off, on some cars. Turn it back on.
Some need a fix:
- Bumper, grille or radar work can knock the radar off its aim.
- A new windshield moves the camera's view.
- An alignment, a lift or new tire sizes can change where both point.
What to do when cruise won't come back
- 1
Read the whole message
Photograph it. Blocked, wipe or clean means something covers a sensor. Check, fault, malfunction, problem or service means a stored fault.
- 2
Clean it and cool it
Wipe the grille and bumper, where the radar sits, and the glass by the mirror with a soft cloth. Cool a hot cabin first.
- 3
Restart and drive
Turn traction control on. Drive in clear weather. Message back more than once a trip with nothing in the way? Get it checked.
- 4
Still off? Send the VIN
Add the message and any bumper, glass, alignment or tire work. We reply with the sensor to re-aim and its price.
What fixing cruise costs
After bumper or grille work, it's usually radar calibration. After new glass, it's camera calibration.
A replaced radar or camera adds its setup (coding), $275.
Calibration, per system
Diagnostic scan
- Same price on a mobile visit, except rows marked Shop bay only.
- Prices are before sales tax. Whether labor is taxed depends on your state; any tax that applies is itemized on your written quote.
- Dynamic calibration runs on the road, so it can be done as a mobile visit. Static calibration needs a level, lit, measured space, so whether your job can be done mobile depends on what your car's documented procedure calls for.
- Rows marked Shop bay only are done in a shop bay. The bay-and-road camera price applies when your car needs both calibrations.

Know your adaptive cruise
Your cruise switched off and you want to know why. Start with the words on your dash, then check what work the car had.
ACC means adaptive cruise control. So "ACC Not Available" or "ACC Unavailable" means adaptive cruise is off for now.
Read the last words of your message. They tell you what to do next:
- Blocked, wipe or clean: something covers the sensor. Clean it and cruise should return.
- Unavailable on its own: often weather or heat. It comes back when that passes.
- Check, problem, malfunction, fault or service: the car stored a fault. That needs a scan.
Kia shows both kinds. "Smart Cruise Control disabled. Radar blocked" clears with a clean cover.
"Check Smart Cruise Control System" on a Kia needs an inspection.

Cruise quit right after a repair? Then the aim is the likely cause.
- A new bumper or grille: per the 2023 RAV4 manual, the radar "must be recalibrated."
- New glass, where cruise reads the camera.
- A disturbed sensor: Ram warns that removing screws from the sensor can "require a sensor realignment."
More on each: after collision repair and after windshield replacement.
Some 2017 Honda CR-Vs (EX and up) showed "Adaptive Cruise Control Problem" from a radar out of aim. Re-aiming fixed it.

Aim is checked at your car's normal ride height. Change the height or stance, and the aim can shift.
- Heavy load or towing: on some 2019 to 2023 Porsche Cayennes, both make an aim fault worse.
- An alignment: the same Cayenne bulletin says the car "may also fail its calibration" afterward.
- Lift kits or new tire sizes: the 2022 Ram 2500 manual says they "will affect the performance" of adaptive cruise.
Cruise quit after an alignment? See calibration after wheel alignment.

Cruise follows the car ahead with a radar, a windshield camera, or both. That decides what a repair affects:
- Radar and camera: 2022 Ram 2500 and 3500, 2023 Toyota RAV4.
- Camera only: 2024 Chevrolet Equinox.
New glass or heat can stop camera-only cruise. On the 2024 Equinox, it returns "once the cabin temperature is lower."
Sources: Ram, 2022 2500 and 3500 Owner's Manual; Toyota, 2023 RAV4 Owner's Manual excerpt; Chevrolet, 2024 Equinox Owner's Manual.
Sometimes the aim is fine and the cause is software or a failed part. A diagnostic scan tells you which.
- Some 2020 and 2021 Atlas Cross Sport and 2021 Atlas: "ACC NOT AVAILABLE" came from camera software, fixed by an update.
- Ram's yellow cruise fault light: a fault in the system. The Ram manual says to contact a dealer.
Still under warranty? Ask the dealer first, because a covered fault is the dealer's to fix.

Adaptive cruise control unavailable: your questions
Often it comes back on its own. Clean the grille and the glass, let a hot cabin cool, and drive in clear weather.
New bumper or grille on a car whose cruise uses a front radar? Calibration is due even if cruise came back.
The same goes for a new windshield where cruise reads the camera.
Start with a soft cloth. Wipe the radar cover in the grille and the windshield by the mirror, then drive.
Had a new bumper or grille? The radar needs recalibrating, $330. After a new windshield, it's the camera, $300.
If pre-collision or lane messages show too, see our pages on Toyota pre-collision system malfunction and lane keep assist unavailable.
Most jobs re-aim one sensor, some both. Front camera calibration is $300 and front radar calibration is $330 at a service center.
Prices are per system, before sales tax where your state charges it on labor, and the full rate card is on the pricing page.
A diagnostic scan, when your job needs one, is priced and itemized separately. Your quote lists each line before you agree.
If cruise is still off after calibration, the aim wasn't the whole cause. The usual next suspects:
- a bent radar bracket, or a wrong or repainted part in front of the radar
- a failed radar or camera
- damaged wiring, or a fault elsewhere that the scan shows
Once the part is repaired, the sensor is re-aimed again.
A replaced radar or camera also needs setting up to your car (coding), $275. Any extra work is quoted before we start.
Did cruise quit after a collision repair or a glass claim? Ask your insurer whether that claim covers re-aiming the sensors.
The quote itemizes each sensor we re-aim, so the adjuster sees what the work covers.
