Do I Need ADAS Calibration?

The short answer depends on what happened to your car recently. ADAS calibration is event-driven - you need it after specific trigger events, not on a schedule. Here is a quick decision guide based on the most common scenarios.

Quick Answer by Trigger Event

What HappenedNeed Calibration?Which System?
Windshield replacedYes - alwaysForward camera
Front bumper removed or resprayedYes - alwaysFront radar
Front-end collisionYes - alwaysRadar + camera (both)
Rear bumper removed or resprayedYes - if BSM equippedBlind spot sensors
Rear collisionYes - if BSM equippedBlind spot + parking sensors
Wheel alignment doneSometimesCamera (make-dependent)
Battery disconnected or replacedRarelySystem reset (BMW, Mercedes, some Audi)
ADAS warning light, no known causeYes - diagnostic + calibrationWhichever system is warning
Trailer hitch installedYes - if BSM equippedRear blind spot sensors
No work done, no warning lightNoNone needed

If your event is in the "Yes - always" category, don't wait for a warning light. Many ADAS systems continue operating with incorrect calibration without displaying a warning.

After Windshield Replacement

Always yes. The forward camera mounts to the windshield glass. Every replacement shifts the camera. Safelite and most glass companies replace the glass but can't calibrate the camera. See our windshield calibration guide.

After Bumper Work or Collision

Almost always yes. Front radar sits behind the grille on most vehicles. Rear BSM sensors sit in the rear bumper. Any removal, repair or respray in these areas shifts sensors. See our collision guide.

After Wheel Alignment

Depends on the make. Toyota, Subaru and some VW Group models require camera recalibration after alignment changes to ride height or wheel geometry. Most other makes don't. Submit your VIN and we check the manufacturer's documentation.

After Battery Replacement

Rarely. BMW, Mercedes and some Audi models can require an ADAS system reset after battery disconnection. If ADAS warnings appeared after battery work and didn't clear after driving, a diagnostic scan confirms whether recalibration is needed.

Warning Light With No Known Cause

Yes - diagnostic scan first, then calibration. Common causes: gradual sensor drift over high mileage, failed OTA software update, or a CAN bus fault. A full-system scan identifies the root cause. See our warning lights guide to match your dashboard message to the likely issue.

Bought a Used Car

Worth a diagnostic scan if you don't know the full repair history. Previous bodywork, windshield replacement or accident damage may have triggered a calibration requirement that was never addressed. This is especially relevant for salvage/rebuilt title vehicles where collision damage is guaranteed. See our salvage vehicle guide.

Pricing starts from $249 for camera calibration. Full details at our cost guide.

Do I Need ADAS Calibration? — Common Questions

Answers to frequently asked questions on this topic

If the service involved removing the bumper, changing the windshield, adjusting alignment or disconnecting the battery, ADAS calibration may be required. Many shops don't flag it. If any trigger events occurred during service, book a diagnostic check.
